Rated 3 out of 5 by from Super durable bag, really annoying bucklesI really like the bag. I really like the company. The buckles on this bag suck. If any tiny amount of snow (almost imperceptible amounts) get into the hip belt buckle, they will not clasp. Even if they clasp, I have had them pop apart unexpectedly under any kind of load. I have taken this bag on several single and multi-day tours, and have not had a single trip where the buckles did not have me cursing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack But Like Old BucklesI'm long time loyal Mystery Ranch fan. You just can't beat the way the new Gallatin Peak 40 carries a big load and no problem skiing with it. My only nit is the switch to the new buckles. They are more prone to fill up with snow and won't close with out blowing and smacking them around. Mystery Ranch was great and sent me the old style belt buckle which I swapped out and thinking of sending it in after ski season to switch out the lid buckles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do NOT pigeonhole this bag as just a Snow Bag!I purchased this particular pack because I saw potential beyond what its intended uses are. The oversized gear loops that were intended to transport skis and snowboards can be used to transport rifles or bows. The helmet tie down is an extra space for a tent or tarp. This bag is packed with features and make it not only an extremely useful snow pack, but an exceptionally versatile backcountry/backpacking pack. I had absolutely no issues carrying everything I needed for a quick overnighter in the backcountry. I firmly believe this bag is a sleeper, and one of the most versatile bags on the market today. The sleek design, attractive color scheme, unique features, combined with unparalleled versatility make the Gallatin Peak 40 my favorite ruck of all time; no matter what I’m doing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bag, ditto on the bucklesAs mentioned in other reviews, the bad is otherwise excellent other than the buckles. If they can improve on making this more snow resistant and easier to lock / unlock, would be the perfect bag for backcountry travel. Also, transitions from skiing to skis packed in the gear loop could be faster. I'd also like to see a bit more memory in the ski gear loop such that it stays open to make dropping the ski tails in a hands-free operation. Also, the strap for the top of the skis does work, but I'd like to see this buckle guide itself better to make it easier and quicker.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great pack but lacks some basic featuresThe pack seems to be very high quality but the lack of a few basic features is puzzling. There are no hip stash pockets and no sleeve on the shoulder strap for a hydration pack hose. Both these features are standard on almost every pack, from entry level packs to high performance. The rest of the design seems great but the lack of hip stash pockets makes the pack not worth it for me, I wish I looked closer before purchasing. If you are fine with not having these features then it would be an amazing backpack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Carries and Skis wellI got this pack about two months ago and have been ski guiding with it about 20+ days so far. Things I love: The three section avy pocket for my probe, saw, and shovel, the dual side zip access in the back is awesome to pulling out skins, water bottle, sticking my hardboot bindings in (im a splitboarder) instead of opening the whole back panel when I don't need to. I took all the gear I guide with, straight from my other 42L and put it in this pack and it feels lighter! I also have more room. I haven't needed to attach my helmet to outside yet, which is great. I dig the goggle pocket in the lid, as well as the other separated pocket. It hasn't been ski mountaineering season yet, so I have yet to attach my board to my pack, but the diagonal carry looks well designed. Things that I don't like; the buckles can sometimes be difficult to use if they get snow in the them. While they are easy to use with gloves, that doesn't matter if they don't close. It should definitely come with a hipbelt pocket, for skiings I want my multitool, scraper, skiwax, chapstick, sunscreen easy to access without taking my pack off. Overall I really like the pack and will end up just getting some MR hipbelt pockets to add on to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pack...a few suggestionsI bought this bag over a year ago and used it for some winter ski mountaineering, spring skiing in the NE and a couple of overnight backpacking trips. Great materials, fairly lightweight and constructed with the high quality I've come to expect from mystery ranch. Great fit: comfortable width on shoulder straps/chest harness, load adjustment keeps things balanced. Side and back straps are easy to cinch tight and adjust with poles and will not loosen up during your hike. Best feature: ability to "easily" unzip back of pack - nice large zippers/Velcro security flap. What kept this from being a 5 is the lack of external tool loops, no crampon storage, no hip pocket, small waste buckle is a pain..
