Why We Like The Runventure 4 Trail Running Shoe

The Runventure 4 weighs in lighter than its predecessor, dropping almost a half ounce, lightening the load on our stride even more. Built with a tight-weave mesh, this shoe lets fresh air flow through yet turns away grit, while the low-profile platform gives us more ground feel for a quicker response to the terrain as we push for negative splits.

I got this shoe to replace my Altra Superior 4 as a lightweight, nimble, and technical running shoe. So far, it has not disappointed in any of those areas. The vibram outsole (to be honest, one of the main reasons I went Topo instead of Altra) is excellent. I've taken this on technical and sometimes muddy or snowy trails in Western NY and its worked great. The midsole is on the firmer side, with a good amount of fore-aft stiffness (as advertised). This contributes to a snappy ride and secure foot placement. In hindsight, I'm finding I do prefer the softer midsole of the Altra Superior, but that is entirely preference and not a flaw in the shoe, just something I'm missing a little. That said, I can see the Topo midsole "lasting" 100+ miles more than the Superior and is getting slightly softer with use. This is where I'm knocking it one star. The Topo upper fit, for me, is true to size with no extra room in the heel or midfoot. I've got a tall foot (high instep), and have found the tongue and laces combination perfect for keeping pressure off the top of my foot. The toebox is wide and the heel feels snug (I've got narrow heels and haven't needed a heel lock/runners knot on these, even on steeper climbs). Foot info, if helpful: My foot is on the narrow side, with narrow heels, high arches, and a high instep. I wear an 11 in Salomon, Hoka, Altra, New Balance, Brooks, Nike, Adidas, 361, Topo, Asics, Mizuno, and Vivobarefoot (I worked in run retail for 3 years :D).

Great traction, but it kills my feet

Most of my hiking is in the NH White Mountains, so steep and rocky. Bought these on the recommendation of someone from Eastern Mountain Sports. They were right about the grip, but I found they dig into my heels, especially on the left side. I did a 25 mile section on the Florida Trail this weekend and they destroyed my feet. Blisters (I never get blisters!) on the small toes and my heel. Maybe it's just the miles, but I've done similar miles (12-13) over much more punishing terrain in my Lone Peaks without issue.
