Why We Like The Mountain Hardwear Scrambler 35L Backpack

The Mountain Hardwear Scrambler 35L Backpack is a durable daypack for climbers and ambitious hikers or an overnight pack for ultralight backpackers. Fully overhauled for better support, stability, and abrasion resistance, it features a TPU-coated nylon ripstop that's ultra-durable and waterproof to protect our gear, lunch, and layers from the elements. The contoured and ventilated back panel keeps us comfortable while the supportive shoulder straps and hip belt, compression straps, and sternum straps secure a close-to-body fit and support for scrambly approaches and technical trails. If we're counting ounces, we can remove the hip belt, straps, lid, and frame sheet for minimalist missions—or carry extra gear with the full-length daisy chains, internal gear loop, and forward-access gear loop, which keeps our clipped gear easily accessible. Like most of Mountain Hardwear's impressive lineup, it's made for alpine terrain and serious outdoor pursuits.

Scrambler 35

This pack really is one of the best multi purpose outdoor adventure packs on the market. I’ve had several versions of the scrambler and this one is the best yet. At 35L it’s a good size for a multitude of activities. It can be stripped down to bare nuts or fully equipped, whatever your taste. Quality is superb. Material is crunchy (due to weather resistance) but feels very durable and light. Features are great without being too much. A much needed improvement was the addition of stabilizers on the shoulder straps, as well as a removable hip belt. I would like to have seen a second set of compression/utility straps toward the bottom of the pack as well. The ones toward the top of the pack are removable and can be relocated pretty much anywhere on the pack. A second set would have allowed for more gear attachment versatility (snowboard/snowshoe/etc). You can still get it done with the provided straps, but two more would have been ideal especially considering they are removable if not wanted. The representation of color was the big disappointment for me. MH typically does a great job at subduing their logos on certain items. On this product webpage, the black version looks very black, pretty much blacked out. The logo looks to be a dark shade of grey and does not contrast much against the black. Also the harness looks to have a very subdued checked or box pattern on the material. I needed a blacked out all purpose climbing/hiking backpack to comply with work regulations, and was excited to see the pictures of the black scrambler on the product web page. Upon arrival however, there was a pretty drastic difference. The front MH logo is basically white and stands out a lot. The checked pattern on the harness material is also basically white and creates a major contrast against the black, much more than meets the eye on the product page photos. Kind of disappointing when the product photos look basically blacked out. I checked the appearance of the pack on my phone, computer, and a second computer and all looked the same.

Hook not great

I love the style of the backpack but I agree with the other reviewers regarding the hook - the hook is not secure enough and the lid is constantly open.

Single Pitch Guiding Pack

As a rock climbing guide I haul a lot of gear in a single pitch setting to set up multiple top rope climbs at the same time. This pack is AMAZING for that, the gear organizer sling inside held my double rack perfectly. The codura material is perfect and seems durable so far. I drag my pack through a lot of joshua tree rocks and no holes yet! Also as a smaller women the hipbelt actually fits and the torso length works great to the the weights distribution to my hip rather than all on my shoulder.

Still reliable after 7 years

I bought an older version of this bag 7 years ago and it is still my most reliable, go to backpack for short trips, hikes, and climbs. I have not been gentle on this bag, it has come everywhere with me and been scraped against all kinds of rocks & trees etc. I have thrown it on wet ground and hiked with it in the rain and everything packed inside stayed dry. today, after 7 years of heavy use, something finally broke- a buckle, no fault of the manufacturing! - and I was able to buy the replacement part easily and fix it myself with no trouble. Cannot recommend this bag enough.

Best Pack, and the best version of it

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I previously had the older Scrambler 35, and while I loved that pack, it really made no sense to not have any hip-padding, which really cause the pack to wear after a long day. The updated version fixed that issue by adding a hip belt and it has much better support. Everything I loved previously about the old Scrambler holds true - it's a durable beast that'll stand up to ice, snow, rocks, dirt, whatever you can find. I was a bit skeptical of the closure hook, especially when taking this pack climbing, but I haven't had it open once.

Not waterproof

Lies, water went right through the seams and in to the bag, very disappointed.

Insanely durable do it all bag.

Managed to score one of these bad Larrys this spring and it was worth EVERY penny. This summer I was working as a botanist on fuel reduction projects in the low to mid elevation Sierra Nevada Mountains. AKA I spent my days bushwacking through the thickest old growth manzanita, chamise, deer/buckbrush, etc, that you could ask for. I decided to try this bag as my other one was getting torn to shreds after three or so weeks on the job. Six months later and this sucker looks good. as. new. Seriously, if anything was going to damage a backpack, it was this job, and I am beyond impressed by the performance here. Not only is it durable, it is comfortable, has plenty of extra features, offers tons of support for a non-backpacking specific bag of its size, and more. It has graduated from my summer field work bag to my grad school / climbing bag. Perfect for carrying my rack and has tons of lash points for extra gear or whatever. Can you throw it in a river? No. Can you walk to class with it or work in a drizzle and keep things relatively dry? Hell yeah you can. The ONLY complaints would be that you have the upper brain, lower brain, main bag, and hydration sleeve, and that is all the division... but just organize within those and you are golden. Also it gets a little warm in the hot hot heat as it sits pretty flush on the back but... whatever, climate change, deal with it. Best do it all backpack I have ever purchased.

Not bad but the closure hook needs revamping.

It’s a great bag overall but the lid doesn’t like to stay closed, the loop pops off the hook extremely easily. I’m disappointed given the price I paid, I need to use a carabiner to help keep the floating lid from opening and flipping around.

Good but need bigger.

First impression remarks: I really like the features and quality. The main thing I notice is tjat at 35L I think it's going to be too small. I'd prefere a 45-50L in this model. I lime the intended versatility and technical aspects of this pack. It could be an "all-mountain", well-rounded climbing pack if it was bigger. The only thing I'm dubious about at this point is the rear haul loop. It has minimal attachment. The front haul loop is heavily reinforced.
